OH man, totally caught the Sycorax reference (Tempest is my
favorite)- So Melville is giving us some Shakespeare to work
with...AND Spencer, at the same time? I thought Melville was
worried about the present and not worried with dwelling in
the past..300 years in the past. And also, Caliban's mother
was the witch Sycorax, a witch is an "enchanted" sort of
person..is Melville perhaps encouraging and underlining the
"dark enchantment" idea of the Encantadas?...then there is
that idea that Sycorax believed that she "owned" the Island
(even though she was from somewhere else) and so does
Caliban and so does Oberlus (who is also a transplant).
